23 Minutes of Chihuahuan Desert

23 Minutes of Chihuahuan Desert is a new work in progress on Super8 film.

Comprised of 23 static shots surveying desert surrounding the El Paso / Juarez border region, the project depicts a disputed and contentious ecology, laden with layers of visual culture and iconography. 23 Minutes... offers space for viewers to meditate and reflect on these associations and the current, ongoing battles for the right for all life to exist with, on, and through these lands.

The structural nature of the medium offers grain, scratches, and other organic variances, insinuating the historical and present-day energies that permeate the seeming stillness of the environment. I’ll be working at this throughout the year, viewing the landscape at different stages throughout the seasons until all the minutes are complete.
